Fishing news: And now for something completely different – Mohave Valley News

BULLHEAD CITY — The weekly fishing report for the Bullhead City area usually centers around trout and stripers — with occasional news about largemouth and smallmouth bass and catfish thrown in.

This week, Rusty Braun, proprietor of Riviera Marina in Bullhead City, had something a little different.

“I did get one of our local anglers to let me put this catch of gizzard shad in,” said Braun as he submitted the photo of the “bashful angler” holding two extra-large shad.

“The larger one weighed in at 3.7 pounds, which is large for this species,” Braun said. “These are usually bait fish and a prime source of food for the striped bass. When they get this size, they will have a lot of offspring.”

Braun said the shad are “fun to catch using fly fishing techniques. Even Rat-L-Traps can work. I’m not sure, but I have heard they are OK to eat. Tasty. I don’t know but I’m waiting to hear back.”

Braun had news on trout and stripers, too.

“We have a lot of trout in the Colorado River here below Davis Dam,” he said. “Our local anglers are having some great success in landing their limits of five rainbow trout.”

One such local angler, Jerry Bussdieker, caught his five from the shore in the Community Park area, using power bait.

“I have reports of spinners also working well – Rooster Tails, Panther Martins, Blue Fox to name a few that have been working. For you bait fishermen, night crawlers and various colors of power bait — light green, yellow and orange were going well.”

Braun said reports of stripers below the dam have placed most of the fish “in the 2-pound range with some in the 5- to 7-pound range.”

Braun said the city-sponsored striper derby will be held June 8-9 with more information upcoming.
