Canaries bounce back, big time! – Newport News Times

Deep-sea fishing unlike anything seen in nearly 20 years has returned to the Oregon coast, where long-dormant gloryholes are yielding outsized rockfish like this whopping canary decked March 4 by Keizer angler Steve Freeman aboard the party boat Triumph (Dockside Charters, 541-765-2545). In 2000, state fish and game officials adopted sweeping restrictions that prohibited taking the delectable but overfished canaries. By 2015, studies found that canary stocks had returned to healthy levels ahead of projections, and the rules were relaxed the following year. (Photo by Rick Beasley)
