AROUND THE HORN: Southington’s Murillo heading to D-III wrestling nationals; Hunter Men’s Club preps for 2019 season – Meriden Record-Journal

MIDDLETOWN — With a second-place finish this weekend at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional in Providence, R.I., Southington’s Zack Murillo earned a berth in the upcoming national championship tournament.

Murillo, a senior 125-pounder at Wesleyan, went 3-1 in the regionals. He posted a 13-0 victory in the Round of 16, won 4-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals and then 2-1 in the semifinals. 

Murillo’s championship bout with Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales, a reigning national Division III champion, went to overtime. With 16 seconds left, Albis recorded a takedown to post a 5-3 victory.

The NCAA Division III national championships are the weekend of March 8-9 in Roanoke, Va.

Murillo came through the Southington High wrestling program. He was Class LL, State Open and New England champion as a 106-pound senior in 2015.

Hunter Men’s Club meeting Sunday

MERIDEN — The annual spring meeting of the Hunter Men’s Club will be held this coming Sunday, March 3 at Violi’s Restaurant at 2 p.m.

So long as the weather holds up, Hunter Golf Course should open for play by mid March.

Fly fishermen gathering March 7

WALLINGFORD — The next monthly meeting of the Housatonic Fly Fishermen’s Association is Thursday, March 7 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 65 North Main Street in Wallingford starting at 7 p.m.

Guest speaker is Ben Bilello, a salmon fishing guide and fly-tier. His presentation is “Traditional Techniques for Broodstock Atlantic Salmon.”

The Housatonic Fly Fishermen’s Association is dedicated to preserving and protecting the Housatonic River and furthering the sport of fly fishing. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday of the month from September through June. Meetings are free and open to the public.

NFL players back in town next weekend

WALLINGFORD — The United Way NFL Players’ Weekend is ready to roll next Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.

The event features three sessions: 

Friday night’s silent/live auction dinner buffet at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn from 6-10 p.m. 

Saturday afternoon’s youth clinic at Choate from noon to 3 p.m.

Saturday night’s “Bowl with the Pros” at Colony Lanes from 6-9:30 p.m.

More than 20 players are expected from the Patriots, Buccaneers, Bears, Ravens, Cowboys and Redskins.

The youth clinic is open to kids ages 8-14. Pre-registration is mandatory. Entry fee is $50.
