MIDDLETOWNÂ â€” With a second-place finish this weekend at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional in Providence, R.I., Southingtonâ€™s ZackÂ Murillo earned a berth in the upcoming national championship tournament.
Murillo, a senior 125-pounder at Wesleyan, went 3-1 in the regionals. He posted a 13-0 victory in the Round of 16, won 4-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals and then 2-1 in the semifinals.Â
Murilloâ€™s championship bout with Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales, a reigning national Division III champion, went to overtime. With 16 seconds left, Albis recorded a takedown to post a 5-3 victory.
The NCAA Division III national championships are the weekend of March 8-9 in Roanoke, Va.
Murillo came through the Southington High wrestling program. He was Class LL, State Open and New England champion as a 106-pound senior in 2015.
Hunter Menâ€™s Club meeting Sunday
MERIDENÂ â€”Â The annual spring meeting of the Hunter Men’s Club will be held this coming Sunday, March 3 at Violiâ€™s Restaurant at 2 p.m.

Fly fishermen gatheringÂ March 7
WALLINGFORD â€” The next monthly meeting of the Housatonic Fly Fishermenâ€™s Association is Thursday, March 7 at St. Paulâ€™s Episcopal Church atÂ 65 North Main Street inÂ Wallingford starting at 7 p.m.
Guest speaker is Ben Bilello, a salmon fishing guide and fly-tier. His presentation is â€śTraditional Techniques for Broodstock Atlantic Salmon.â€ť
The Housatonic Fly Fishermenâ€™s Association is dedicated to preserving and protecting the Housatonic River and furthering the sport of fly fishing. Monthly meetings are heldÂ the first Thursday of the month from September through June. Meetings are free and open to the public.
NFL players back in town next weekend
WALLINGFORD â€” The United Way NFL Playersâ€™Â Weekend is ready to roll next Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.
The event features three sessions:Â
Friday nightâ€™s silent/live auction dinner buffet at Zandriâ€™s Stillwood Inn fromÂ 6-10 p.m.Â
Saturday afternoonâ€™s youth clinic at Choate fromÂ noon to 3 p.m.
Saturday nightâ€™s â€śBowl with the Prosâ€ťÂ at Colony Lanes fromÂ 6-9:30 p.m.
More than 20 players are expected from the Patriots, Buccaneers, Bears, Ravens, Cowboys and Redskins.
The youth clinic is open to kids ages 8-14. Pre-registration is mandatory. Entry fee is $50.
